Energy Transition Alliance

Behind the Northern German Living Lab stands a unique energy transition alliance. It consists of 23 funding partners and 27 associated partners, supported by six northern German authorities and ministries.

These partners cover the entire energy value chain – from generation to transport and storage to consumption of energy in industry, heat supply and the mobility sector. This diversity enables the NRL to take a holistic view of the energy system and its generation and consumption sectors. To this end, the partners work on different sub-projects and network in nine thematic working groups.

The NRL partners are a strong community of equals. They are united by their determination to drive forward the energy transition ambitiously and quickly.

Strong network for the North

The NRL creates a strong partnership between companies, institutions and research facilities. Together, the project partners will develop, apply, and operate innovative energy technologies and infrastructures.

The corporate partners are players who are familiar with regional conditions due to their market experience. They have the potential to develop innovative business models and concepts and the ability to implement them in the market.

The involvement of scientific partners forms an essential link in the overall systemic approach of the project. They accompany the trial projects with socio-economic research and ensure the dissemination and transferability of the findings. In addition, there is close interaction with network institutions such as chambers of commerce, cluster organizations, the Hamburg Energy Research Association, the Hamburg Hydrogen Economy Network, and the political initiative for the development of a joint hydrogen strategy for the northern German coastal states.

Steering Board

The Northern German Living Lab is managed by a six-member steering board. The provisional project coordinator is Mike Blicker from the Competence Center for Renewable Energies and EnergyEfficiency (CC4E) at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences. The central project management for the NRL is carried out by the Project Management Office (PMO) of the CC4E together with hySOLUTIONS GmbH. Many of the NRL partners involved have already successfully collaborated under the leadership of the CC4E in the project NEW 4.0 – Norddeutsche EnergieWende.
